Here is the first week of classes. Below you will find links to the recordings, slides and the first exercise sheet to be discussed in the first exercise session on Feb 26th. 

Note that that we are trying hard to provide you with decent recordings but we cannot promise that the quality will always be good and / or that we can post the videos directly after class. We try, but don't rely on recordings and come to class. There is a problem with the video quality (frame rate is low) but the sound is ok. We try to look into this ...


This week we have the first exercise session. That means: Lectures Wed 12-14 and exercises Wed 15-17. You'll get to know the entire team that will be supporting you this semester.  Note that we (likely) fixed the recording problem so that the video should now be smooth with an acceptable frame rate.


This week fluids finally start to move: We finish the chapter on Hydrostatics and discuss the Bernoulli equation as well as its 'sibling'. Solving flow problems using these tools requires practice - so please have a look at the exercise problems.


This week we will discuss how to use Bernoulli's equation to solve practical flow problems. There are also several problems in the exercise sheet related to it


This week we start a new topic: Diffusion. 

Note that this part is NOT based on the textbook.


This week we discussed time-dependent diffusion and solving the Diffusion equation with homogenous boundary conditions using series expansions. Contrary to last year, this has already been covered in your Analysis class. 

To (a) not bore you yet (b) make sure everyone really knows how to solve such a linear PDE (and why the we can find a solution in the discussed way) I choose the following compromise: We reduced the time in class by only considering one example of homogenous boundary conditions. However, if you want to see another example, you can go through the videos from 2023. Note that you do NOT have to watch those - it's just an extra resource for those of you, who want to see more.

You will also realize (and hopefully appreciate) the written solutions for the exercise sheets, where we again explain the logic. Hope that helps and works for everyone.

This week, we finish diffusion and get back to fluids. 

Notes 

  • Sorry for the late upload! I had serious technical issues with the processing of the videos and than forgot to take care of Moodle over the weekend. Maybe all of us need a break... and if the material of a lecture is not available by the end of the following weekend, you are allowed to send me an email! ... also not making the new exercise sheet visible is less than ideal.... well... now it's there! 
  • As promised, I am providing you with extra material on the Green's function approach for solving the Diffusion equation on an infinite domain. This is really only for those of you, who are curious about it. There is no need to follow the material and obviously it will NOT be required for the exam




No class this week - see you again after the well-deserved break!!!

Reminder - because it is the Ascension weekend and because I have to attend a conference abroad (scheduled during the holiday....), we will not have a lecture. The last chapter on viscous laminar flow (Chap. 6.8) is therefore covered in a recording. That means, we have the following schedule for May 28:

  • 12-14: No class!! Replaced by recordings
  • 15-17: Regular exercises session covering the last sheet, no 7: I will not be around but please be nice to my (actually your!!) TAs

After discussions with some of you about your exam schedule, we decided the best option to offer an extra  Q&A session on Friday, June 13th late afternoon. We will update you on the precise time, place, and logistics but you can already plan accordingly.


12 June - 18 June

Q&A Session Friday June 16, 16h00 - 18h00 

Dear All,
As promised, we are organizing a Q&A session, in which you can ask questions that came up during the exam preparation. The format will be like the standard exercise sessions. That means, there will not be organized material but myself and some of the TAs will be present so that you can ask questions. You can drop in and leave whenever you want. And for those of you who are not joining: Of course there won't be extra material or tips and you thus won't miss anything. 

  • Where: CM3 (our regular lecture hall)
  • When: Friday June 16th, between 16h00 and 18h00 - stop by and leave whenever you want!

In addition, a few infos on the exam

  • As explained, the exam has two parts. A: Short questions and B: Problems in the style of the exercises (but more guided). I upload a sample title page so that you have an idea of what to expect. 
  • We will upload the seat and room assignments to Moodle on Monday by noon. Please check the information online so that you don't get nervous searching for your seat (we will be using 4 rooms simultaneously).

EXTRA Q&A Session June 13th, 16h15

Dear All,

I hope you had a few days of rest and that your preparations for your multiple exams are progressing well. A few points:

  1. As promised, we will organize a Q&A session on June 13th, 16h15 - 18h00 in room BS160. The format will be similar to the exercises. That means some (not all!) TAs and myself will be there to answer your questions. Just stop by and leave as you wish. For those who cannot join: No worries, there will not be any extra material and we won't give any tips - we will only answer questions and you are not missing anything! Note: Please be patient with us. As many of your TAs are BA/MA students themselves and thus have their own exams to prepare and/or are traveling, we will be much fever than in the exercises. Also the room is smaller but there was no way to reserve SG1... well... we will do the best we can !!!! 
  2. I got some emails with logistic questions regarding the exam  [Sorry, I can't answer all directly]. Just to clarify again, what I said before:

  •  Your A4 sheet can be produced in any way you want [computer, Ipad, handwritten, ancient calligraphic art,...] - it just has to fit on one sheet [2-sided]. 
  • You do NOT have to write down differential operators in non-cartesian coordinates. I promised that the exam will follow the style of the exercises. In the exercises we gave you the form of the equations in non-cartesian coordinates, if needed - and we will obviously follow the same principle in the exam
I will provide more infos on the logistics of the exam (room and seat assignments ect.) on Moodle before Friday 20th. Please check Moodle.

(1) To avoid large crowds, we will open the different rooms at staggered times and I will provide the same information in each of the rooms. Please try to be seated for the initial information at the given time. Afterwards you can move around and we will all start the exam together at 15h15
