Description
Slides of the 13th lecture .
- basic 2D potential flow solutions via superpositions:
- (1) the half-body (2) Rankine ovals (3) flows around a circular cylinder and (4) around a rotating cylinder.
- Lift and drag forces including d'Alembert's paradox.
- lift and drag on an airfoil (short)
Suggested reading:
Munson: Ch. 6.6.2-6.6.3 & 9.4.2
Notes: On the Kutta–Joukowski theorem (if you are interested in the proof - it's cleanly described in Wikipedia !):
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kutta–Joukowski_theorem (and the proof uses exactly the tools you learned in Complex Analysis including Laurent series for holomorphic functions and the residue theorem!!)
Lastly: Check out the NASA pages about lift on airfoils and specifically on incorrect lift theories. Links are on the slides and although the NASA websites are meant for high-school students, I like them a lot!
