Module: How to Cite in Life Sciences
The aim of this 'Information Literacy' module by the EPFL library team is to learn how to:
- Search for scientific information (databases, search methodology)
- Manage the information (use of Zotero reference manager)
- (Re)use the information (how to cite correctly)
The module consist of three parts:
- Pre-class preparation: database search (will be discussed in class) and installation of software
- In class: live presentation and exercise
- After class: complete quiz and submit exercise started in class
Submission of exercise and quiz by 17 March 2025 is mandatory to validate BIOENG-390
- Login to Moodle as a student (not ‘Campus’) with your GASPAR username and password to submit the exercise (see assignment) and to complete the quiz.
Pre-class: How to use PubMed Database
- Learn how to search PubMed citation database with the interactive tutorials below.
- Search articles related to your bachelor project in PubMed. Combine minimum two search terms (keywords). Post your search terms to Padlet. Among your results, how many reviews do you find? Add a line with the number of reviews found to your Padlet note. We will discuss examples in class.

- PubMed: Get the full text for an article (URL)
Pre-class: How to use Zotero Citation Manager
- Watch the video ‘How To Use Zotero- A Complete Beginner’s guide’.
- Download and install Zotero software and activate the connector in your browser.
- Add one or two references from the PubMed search related to your bachelor project to Zotero.
Your questions will be discussed in class.
