Oral Exam
Dear students,
I hope this message finds you well. The oral exam will take place January 15-17. I have created an exam scheduler on moodle, where you can select a time slot for your oral exam. Each slot spans 30 minutes. These slots will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, and once you have booked a slot, it cannot be changed.
The oral exam consists of 2 questions, and the duration of the exam is 30 minutes.
The two questions are chosen from two separate pools: Pool 1 (theory part) and Pool 2 (problem solving part).
- Pool 1 focuses on topics covered in the lecture notes and the material we discussed in class. Only results and proofs appearing in the lecture notes will be covered. This pool aims to test your comprehension of the broader concepts of the subject matter, and the questions are designed to assess your understanding of the theoretical aspects of ergodic theory.
- Pool 2 focuses on problem-solving. The questions in this pool are taken directly from our weekly exercise sheets. You can find the solutions to all the exercise problems on Moodle.
At the start of the exam, you'll randomly draw two questions from Pool 1 and two questions from Pool 2. From the two Pool 1 questions, you can choose the one you prefer to answer, and the same goes for the Pool 2 questions.
Once your questions are determined, you'll have 5 minutes of preparation time. This is your chance to gather your thoughts and think through your answers. After the preparation time is up, we'll spend approximately 25 minutes discussing your answers to Question 1 and Question 2.
Finally, on moodle you will find the Assessment Sheet that is used as a rubric for evaluation and grading your oral exam. Take a look so you know what to expect.
Good luck with your exam, and remember to take a deep breath and do your best!
Written Exam
Here are the key details and instructions for the upcoming exam:
- The written exam is 3 hours (180 min) and consists of 9 questions, out of which you have to answer 6. You can choose yourself which 6.
- The use of books, notes, calculators, computers, tablets or phones is prohibited.
- The only items you need to bring for the exam are writing utensils (pen) and a valid ID (either your CAMIPRO card or an official government-issued ID such as a driver’s license or passport). You don't need to bring paper, all scratch paper and exam answer sheets will be provided.
- When answering exam questions, you may use results from the course without providing proofs, as long as you clearly state the result and apply it correctly, except when a question explicitly asks you to prove a result from the lectures.
- Each question on the exam is graded out of 8 points using the following rubric: mathematical correctness (worth 5 points) and proof-writing quality (worth 3 points). The maximal amount of points that you can score on the exam is 48.
Good luck with your preparations!
