COURSE:

The course takes place every Thursday, 2:15 pm - 6:00 pm

  • Room: CM 1105 (lecture & exercise), CM 1103 (labs)

EXAM SCHEDULE:
  • Midterm: 7/11/2024 (2:15 - 3:45 pm)
  • Final: 19/12/2024 (2:15 - 5:00 pm)

LABS:
For the completion of the two laboratories, students will work in groups and will prepare one group report for each lab assignment. Students are kindly requested to form groups of 4 or 5 and register them in the provided tool (see below). PLEASE REMEMBER TO PRESS "SUBMIT" TO COMPLETE THE ASSIGNMENTS.

MOOC:

https://courseware.epfl.ch/courses/course-v1:EPFL+transport-systems+2019/about
Please register for the online course "Intro to Traffic Flow Modeling and Intelligent Transport Systems" (linked above). This course, created by our team, provides students with video lectures and exercises on several transportation related topics. During the semester, you will be asked to watch some of the video lectures and discuss the material taught in the classroom or ask questions.

The same course also exists on edx.org platform (see here), where discussion forums are also available. Please feel free to register as audit students (no payment needed).

Introduction to transportation systems, queueing theory

Welcome to CIVIL-349 Traffic Engineering.

You can start forming groups of 5 or 4 students for working together on labs 1 and 2, using the tool in the Moodle section above. Please do so before Monday, Sept. 23. Afterwards we will complete the group assignment for students who have not joined a group.

Traffic flow variables, fundamental diagram (MOOC)

  • You are kindly requested to watch the video lectures entitled "Traffic Flow Variables" and "Fundamental Diagram" of the Week 1 of the online course "Intro to Traffic Flow Modeling and Intelligent Transport Systems" (find the links to register for this course at the top of this page). No lecture will be held between 14:00 and 16:00
  • Exercise session will begin at 16:15 (CM 1105), where you can discuss and ask questions regarding the material presented in the video lectures.

Input-out diagrams, traffic flow modeling: LWR Theory; Lab 1 introduction

  • 14:15 - 16:00: Lecture in the classroom
  • 16:15 - 18:00 (computer lab CM 1103): Introduction to Lab 1, and work in groups to complete tasks 1 and 2. TAs will be available to answer your questions. You should ensure that you are able to work with Jupyter Notebooks on your computer or the EPFL computers.
Please watch the video lecture "Input-Output diagrams" (Week 1 of MOOC courses) at your own time, as the content will be relevant for the completion of Lab 1. An exercise session on the content will follow later in the semester.

Lab 1: Studying traffic flow properties through a dataset of real vehicle trajectories

  • Room: CM 1103
  • 14:15 - 18:00 work in groups to complete tasks 3 and 4. TAs will be available to answer your questions.

Introduction to on-demand transportation and sharing systems (Prof. Kenan Zhang, EPFL)
