How to annotate PDF files

Try to annotate your PDF, rather to print them to save paper.

With adobe

  • Get Adobe Acrobat Reader on their website. Available for Windows & Mac
  • Download and install it
  • Open it, or open a pdf file. The first time, you’ll have to login with your EPFL credentials
  • On the right, select “Fill & Sign”
  • After this, on the top, select “Add text”
  • Clic on the pdf and start typing your notes

With Foxit reader

If you prefer freewares,
  • Get Foxit Reader on their website. Available for Windows & Mac
  • Download and install it
  • Open it, or open a pdf file
  • At the top, select “Comment > Typewriter”
  • Clic on the pdf and start typing your notes


With Zotero

Zotero is an open-source reference manager. It will keep you organized with your references and also allow to annotate and add notes to PDFs.
  • Get Zotero on their website. Available for Windows, Mac, Linux and iOS.
  • Download and install it
  • Open it
  • Clic on "new item" (+)
  • Choose "Journal Article" or "Report"
  • Fill in the title, and any other field that you may need
  • Right click on your item in the list and select "Add attachment" to link it with your PDF.
  • You can now double click on your entry to open the attached PDF in Zotero and annotate it.
  • To add a separate note: Right click on your item in the list and select "Add note".
  • It is also possible to add an item using its Digital Object Identifier (DOI)
