Abstract:

In this lecture, we'll explore real-world examples of process development in the chemical industry. We'll start by introducing Syngenta's production site in Monthey and discuss the key skills chemical engineers need for successful process development. Through a practical case study, we'll demonstrate how these skills are applied in industry. This introduction will set the stage for a deeper look into three specific case studies, each highlighting different aspects of process development. These examples will show how the concepts you learn in class are put into practice in industry, emphasizing the multidisciplinary nature of process development.

The first case study will walk through the steps of developing a wastewater treatment unit, from initial idea to final implementation. We'll focus on process intensification and the challenges faced along the way. The second case study will look at improving energy efficiency in solvent recovery, including the use of advanced technologies like Mechanical Vapor Recompression (MVR). This will show how process integration can significantly reduce energy use. The final case study will tackle a real problem: troubleshooting a product quality issue caused by a reaction failure. We'll discuss the potential hazards involved and how process development principles are used to solve unexpected problems and maintain product quality and safety.
