Description

Workshop 3 - December 4th 17:15 - GC B3 30 (https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==GC%20B3%2030)

In this seminar, Dr. Karatza will present the MATEX (MATériaux EXcavés) project at CERN, a crucial component of the proposed Future Circular Collider (FCC) study. The MATEX project aims to develop a comprehensive, circular strategy for the classification, management, reuse, and disposal of a vast quantity of excavated material, prioritizing sustainability over traditional disposal.

About the speaker

Dr Zeynep Karatza is a geomechanics specialist at CERN. She holds an MEng in Mining Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) with a focus on geotechnical engineering, followed by an MSc in Geomechanics from Université Grenoble Alpes. She completed her PhD on granular materials at the University of Edinburgh, in collaboration with Lab 3SR in Grenoble. She later served as a temporary lecturer in geotechnical engineering and soil mechanics at the University of Edinburgh, before undertaking postdoctoral research with Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt Universities on the hydro-mechanical behavior of hydrophobic soils. She subsequently held an MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowship at NTUA, studying the response of concrete at elevated temperatures. Before joining CERN, she worked as a geotechnical consultant at OTM ATE in Athens

The workshop is an important part of the course and its content will be included in the written exams.
