Why: Having AMPL installed in your personal machine allows you to work on your projects even when you are not connected to the EPFL networks or the VMs

Caution:  The community edition of AMPL has solvers that are open-source and can be slower than the commercial solvers that you have access too when you are connected to the VMs. This step is only recommended for the Task 4 when solving MILP problems where you can choose to use HIGHS, GCS, CBC or SCIP solvers. The non-linear problems that you will encounter during this projects might be beyond the capabilities of the open source non-linear and global solvers in terms of convergence times. Hence, this step is only recommended for task 4.

How:

  • Login to the AMPL portal and create for yourself an account with your EPFL account if you don't have one already.
  • This step will redirect you to the page where you can download the AMPL installer for your operating system.
  • The page also has a UUID, for activating your AMPL license and remove any size limits.
  • The open source solvers and AMPL IDE are installed by default through this step.
  • Make sure the AMPL directory where the ampl executable file is downloaded is referenced properly as an environment variable. This is should be take care of by the installer by default, ideally.
